I have read a few books from this author and they are usually okay but they always leave me wanting a more complete ending or a less contrived storyline.
This story is actually the only one so far that seems completely thought out and not contrived.
It's a story that starts with an Indian legend about a woman who dies and becomes a beautiful flower, called "Queen of the Night".
In todays times, the story starts with a man, a very sick man, who kills his wife and family and goes off hunting his mother who he blames for all the problems in his life.
In another part of the country, an Indian tribe is getting ready to celebrate the blooming of the flower, Queen of the Night.
There is a border patrol officer with a scary bloody past who finds a child and shares a history with and a compassion for. There is a doctor who was an orphan who was adopted by loving and caring parents.
There is a man and woman who married after previous unhappy marriages. They love deeply for one another and for the child in their lives.
They all come together to be a family by way of a brutal murder and through personal sacrifices made.
It's an interesting story and a look into life on a reservation. I enjoyed it and the characters had a lot of depth without being the too over the top.
